Job Description:

TYPSA is seeking resumes from qualified geotechnical engineers for our Irvine, California office. The candidate will be involved in the geotechnical aspects of a wide variety of civil engineering projects including transportation, rail and transit, energy, and water, in North America and beyond. This will include structure foundations, retaining structures, tunnels, slope stability, earthworks, and earthquake engineering. Underground construction is an important part of our portfolio, and the candidate will contribute to exciting and challenging tunneling projects in a multidisciplinary and collaborative environment.


Primary job duties:

  • Plan and manage geotechnical investigation programs. Field work is not anticipated but experience in conducting geotechnical investigations, logging, and classification is a plus.
  • Data interpretation and derivation of geotechnical design parameters, including advanced constitutive models.
  • Perform geotechnical engineering analyses including: design of shallow and deep foundations, settlement analysis, slope stability assessment, design of earth retaining systems, and seismic hazard evaluation (including ground motions, liquefaction, and lateral spreading). 
  • Perform engineering analyses related to underground construction including: support of excavation, face pressure calculations, estimation of tunneling-induced settlements and contruction impact assessment, and soil-structure interaction models, among other.
  • Prepare geotechnical engineering reports, memorandums, specifications, and drawings.
  • Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, locally and internationally.


Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Skills):

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Geological Engineering. Masters Degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Geological Engineering is a plus.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, preferably in California, or able to obtain the CA PE within 1 year of hire.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in the geotechnical engineering / tunneling industry.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills and a sound technical background in soil and rock mechanics.
  • Experience with commercial geotechnical software (e.g. Rocscience or Ensoft software). Proeficiency with finite element modelling is a plus.
  • Familiar with the use of CAD software.
  • Attention to detail, dedication to quality and accuracy.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Working Conditions and Environment:

This position will require general supervision and will have to use independent judgment within established guidelines. Generally, uses the advanced knowledge to analyze, interpret, or make deductions from varying facts or circumstances. Will need the ability to establish rapport quickly with others working on the same project, and be able to promote a positive team environment. Working knowledge of dealing with a diverse population while using tact, diplomacy, and respect.
