Are you looking for a role that builds depth of understanding, not just clock experience? This Assistant Farm Manager role suits someone with sound farming skills and the ability to lead people well, working alongside the 50/50 Sharemilkers to drive consistent performance through clear standards and disciplined execution.

 

Located at Pleasant Point, South Canterbury, milking 800 cows across a 230ha milking platform, supported by a 135ha runoff used for calving and young stock. The farm operates a System 4, with strong pasture management and in-shed feeding to maximise production, milking through a 50-bale rotary. Irrigation is via centre pivots and individual sprinklers, supplied by a reliable water scheme.

 

The Role

This is a genuine Assistant Farm Manager role with real scope. You’ll work closely with the 50/50 Sharemilkers and play a key part in lifting performance across people and systems. Your focus will include:

  • People and Team Culture: Support coordination, clear communication, staff development and step into leadership when required.
  • Feed and Pasture Management: Monitor pasture and residuals, identify surpluses early, support feed/supplement decisions and in-shed feeding delivery and coordinate topping, rotation and fertiliser timing.
  • Shed Management: Maintain cowshed routines and standards across milk quality, hygiene, plant care and compliance.
  • Operational Execution: Deliver the seasonal plan through prioritisation, disciplined systems, risk management and ownership of key areas.

  • Proven experience in a high-performing dairy system (higher-input feeding ideal).
  • Strong people skills — calm, clear communication and the ability to bring others with you.
  • Operational discipline — plans ahead, follows through and lifts efficiency.
  • Ownership mindset — takes responsibility, solves problems and holds standards.
